Overview
Cybercrime often involves violation of intellectual property laws, theft (such as identify theft), violation of copyright.
Specifically, cybercrime can include: astroturfing, malware, spyware, phishing, pharming, viruses, and worms. Astroturfing is the act of blogging about misinformation that prompts other to blog about the same content. Malware is software designed with the intention of disrupting a system (i.e. virus). Spyware is software that covertly gathers user information through their internet connection without their knowledge. Phishing occurs when mass emails are sent proclaiming to be from a legitimate enterprise when they are actually the product of scam artists. These scam artists solicit your personal identifying information to perpetrate crimes such as identity theft. Worms are a program or algorithm that multiples itself throughout a computer network for malicious purposes.
Cybercrime is of particular concern because it can be committed remotely, across state and international borders, can be automated and conducted en masse, and can be carried out anonymously.
