Introduction

When Latham & Watkins began, it started with only three attorneys. Growth was gradual, with most expansion occurring internationally. Today, Latham & Watkins employs approximately 2000 attorneys in over 30 offices worldwide. The firm credits its policy of being “one firm” as one of the keys to its success, incorporating financial transparency and a different management style, emphasizing productive teamwork over individual success.[1]

Latham & Watkins, initially known for only a couple of strong practice areas, has grown to become a leader in many legal fields, including, transactional and finance work, litigation, and corporate and regulatory law. Latham & Watkins recently achieved notoriety for grossing over $2 billion in annual revenue in 2007, as well as for freezing second-year associate salaries at the first-year level in 2008 during the recent financial crisis.[2]

Latham & Watkins is also known for its pro bono work and public service. With its worldwide reach, Latham & Watkins not only offers pro bono work in the United States, but also in communities around the world, providing over 200,000 hours of complimentary legal services in 2010 alone.[3]

Diversity is also an issue of importance to Latham & Watkins. Through various diversity initiatives and programs targeting women and minorities as well as its own Diversity Committee, Latham & Watkins strives to promote diversity and the benefits it brings to an organization by promoting equal opportunity firm-wide.[4]

Latham & Watkins Recruiting

Associates at Latham & Watkins praise the great reputation of the firm, the quality of their colleagues, and the intellectual challenges that the work often presents. Complaints bemoan the size of the firm, leading to a good deal of administrative red tape, as well as a feeling that making partner is nearly impossible.[8]

Latham & Watkins often hires from its pool of summer associates, but also visits various campuses and legal job fairs to interview law students for first-year positions. Latham & Watkins is also known for hiring former judicial law clerks, experienced attorneys, and also hires legal professionals in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.[9]

New associates at Latham & Watkins have the freedom to explore different practice areas within the firm for two years before choosing a department.
