United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit

The Eleven Circuits of the United States Court of Appeals were authorized by Congress and Article III of the US Constitution. The judges that serve on the bench are nominated by the President of the United States, and confirmed by the United States Senate. The judges serve a lifetime tenure.

Why the Courts were Established

The U.S. Courts of Appeals were the first Federal Courts designed exclusively to hear cases on appeal from trial courts. In an effort to relieve the caseload burden in the Supreme Court and to handle a dramatic increase in federal filings, Congress, in the Judiciary Act of 1891, established eleven courts of appeals, one for each judicial circuit.[1]

Tenth Circuit Location

The United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit is one of eleven circuits of Federal Courts with Appellate Jurisdiction. The Tenth Circuit court is located at the Byron White U.S. Courthouse in Denver, Colorado.[2]

Tenth Circuit Jurisdiction

The Tenth Circuit has jurisdiction over the following districts:[3]

  • District of Colorado
  • District of Kansas
  • District of New Mexico
  • Eastern District of Oklahoma
  • Northern District of Oklahoma
  • Western District of Oklahoma
  • District of Utah
  • District of Wyoming
