Part of the U.S. legal system, compassionate release grants terminally ill inmates an early release from prison.

Overview
Compassionate release grants those inmates with a terminal illness or disease to be released from prison to spend their remaining days with family. Such illness or disease diagnosis must be validated and the inmate must have a life expectancy of less than a year typically. Compassionate release is also known as medical parole.
