District of Columbia v. Heller is a case decided by the Supreme Court of the United States on June 26, 2008, in which the Court held that the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution protects an individual's right to bear arms.

The original suit was brought by residents of Washington, D.C., who wished to challenge the District's ban on possession of handguns. After dismissal at the district court level, the D.C. Circuit reversed and held that an outright ban on handgun ownership was unconstitutional, and that other restrictions in the law also violated the Second Amendment right of individuals to bear arms.

Heller is the first Supreme Court case in which the Second Amendment was held to create an individual right.
