Domain Name

A domain name is an identification label that defines an administrative area in the Internet.

Based on the Domain Name System (DNS), it is a component of a Uniform Resource Locator (URL) used to access web sites.

There are a number of categories of domains, including .com (commercial),.org (organization), .biz (business), .gov (government), .edu (education), .mi, .info, and .net.

In addition to types of organizations, there are over 248 country codes, including

  • be=Belgium
  • ca=Canada
  • de=Germany
  • se=Sweden

There are a number of companies with which you can register a specific domain name. Registration is governed by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN),
